Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. Only a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or physician can prescribe medications. I provide talk and behavioral therapy which focuses on you making connections between patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so that you can make the changes you want to see in your life - usually by improving your relationship with yourself and others. I am happy to collaborate with any medication providers that you are also seeing.

  • The duration of therapy depends on your specific needs, the goals you set at the start of treatment, and the efforts you put into achieving those goals. Generally, the therapeutic process takes time. It’s not something that will change “overnight”.  Therapy is experienced differently by each person and sometimes may feel like change is happening quickly or slowly. Working with a therapist you enjoy working with can help the process go more smoothly.

Depending on what you are looking for and needing, therapy can be short, medium or long. During our initial sessions, we will discuss what you are seeking from the therapeutic journey and set goals together. We will also discuss your wants and my clinical recommendations about the frequency of your visits and estimated timeline for treatment. Most therapists, including myself, require weekly sessions to start, as this will help us get to know one another and more deeply define your needs. We can explore changing the frequency of visits when you are ready.

Ultimately, the answer to this question is entirely up to you. Sometimes you may know when you are ready to end treatment before I do, and I will welcome that day when you feel ready. My job is to support you in learning the tools and making the changes you want in life so that you can apply these tools in your daily life. If I ever sense that you may be ready to end treatment, I will explore this topic with you and we will likely reassess your goals to decide whether continuing or ending treatment is right for you, in that moment.

  • Psychotherapy can help you gain important insights about yourself, your relationships, your emotions, how you communicate with others, and what you need in order to live a life of meaning. Therapy can be helpful for exploring improved coping strategies to deal with life’s challenges.

Working with a therapist can help you explore your experiences from different perspectives and, perhaps, shift your own perspective. This typically has the benefit of you better understanding your wants & needs, how you want to communicate with others, learning any boundaries you may want to set with others, learning organizational tools, getting in touch with your emotions and learning how to emotionally express yourself, identifying your values so you can live a values-based life, and understanding connections between your emotional and physical wellbeing.

I take a holistic approach to providing therapy, which means that we will explore connections between your physical wellbeing, emotional health, communication patterns, activities, thoughts, life experiences, and any spirituality you celebrate. Together, these things make up who you are and where you are heading in life. Exploring these aspects of yourself can lead to you developing a sense of empowerment in how you feel about yourself and how you express yourself with others. My goal is to support you in showing up authentically for yourself and the people who are important to you, and in living a life of purpose.
